A Thousand Pieces of Silver
24-11-12

The house was lost, the family scattered,
One here, three there; sacred bond shattered.
Three left to find another place;
A brand new start, a brand new space.

Funds limited by one-person income,
Now limits the searches that can be done,
To find a place where three can live;
To start again; forget, forgive.

But an extra thousand I can find
Per month, though not with piece of mind.
If I sell myself for a thousand rand,
We could rent a house with larger land.

He would marry me, for at most five years,
We’d live apart, no mess, no tears.
It would be a marriage in only name,
Not one for love; they’re not the same.

If I go ahead and marry this man,
I’ll bring in an extra thousand grand.
Which could be used for food or rent;
At any rate it’ll be well-spent.

So should I say yes, should I agree?
If I do what will become of me.
Bound to a man until I’m thirty-one;
And if I meet another I’m screwed, I’m done.

A thousand pieces of silver a month,
That’s what my life is worth.
And it seems the only option
To secure a home on earth.
True life story.
