Description

Genevieve was busy in the “History of Potions” section of the library, doing some light reading. She didn’t hope to gain anything from it other than some knowledge of the subject, but history was fun and so was potions so together it should be a very interesting subject to read about. She grabbed a brightly covered book from the shelf and took it to the study table nearby. Leafing through the book she found an old recipe for a potion to make your eyebrows thicker and more lustrous. “Why would anyone want that?” She muttered to herself, taking a sip of water from her water bottle. The water tasted stale, but the bottle had been freshly filled just before she entered the library.

Shrugging, she took another sip and studied the book. “To change the colour of your eyes, read below.” She read out loud. “Ingredients: chameleon skin, thirteen grams, cuttlefish sacs, four grams, six squid tentacles, 3 spider legs, frogs blood.” She shuddered. Sounded tasty. She read on. “In a mortar grind the skin, sacs, legs and tentacles until a fine powdery consistency is achieved. Add in blood and mix until paste is formed – if mixture is too liquid add more skin, if mixture is too doughy add more blood. Rub paste onto eyes and wait seven and a half minutes before washing eyes out with milk. Eyes should change to suit your mood. Effects should wear off in 24 hours.” Interesting. She turned the page and took another sip of water. Her tongue felt woolly and her mouth was drying out at an alarming rate. A bead of sweat rolled down her back, followed by a drop in temperature that left her shivering. “I must be getting sick, just my luck.” She took another sip of water. Her eyes began to ache and she licked her lips. The words swam on the page and she squinted to read them, struggling, as if her eyesight had weakened. She licked her lips again. There was a curious buzzing noise in her ears, and she looked up at the curtain. There was a little black speck moving on it, which she could swear had not been there before, and she licked her lips again. She closed her eyes for a brief second and the buzzing stopped, but there was something crunchy in her mouth.

"Did I just eat a fly?!” She opened her eyes again – the black speck was gone, as was the buzzing noise – and turned around to face the bookshelves, disorientated. Raising a hand to rub her aching eyes she took one look at her newly green skin and webbed hand and began to panic. “What’s happening? I’m so…itchy. So…dry. So…green.” She blinked, the books were beginning to blur and grow further and further away. “Am I…shrinking?” She licked her lips again, only this time a long pink tongue slipped from her lips and slapped a book on the shelf. “What the hell was that?” She thought to herself, as the final transformation completed.

She tried to turn her head and realised that she could only move her eyes – her neck didn’t seem to want to move normally – and that she was small, a small tree frog to be exact. “How the hell? What the hell? How do I fix this?” She looked up at the books on the shelves, wondering if one of them could help her transform back, and then realised she’d never be able to reach them. She tried walking, but could only hop towards the chair she had been sitting on. “I might as well try the book I have, maybe one of these potions could help me.” She hopped onto the chair and looked at the book, but it was too blurry. Hopping onto the table she knocked the book onto the floor – thankfully it fell with its spine on the ground and pages flapping open – and hopped down to read it. The text was so blurry, so she hopped further and further back in hopes of reading the text. “H-O-R---horrible? Horny? No! Horn! It says Horn! Not what I’m looking for.” She hopped forward and tried turning the page, but her arms were too short. Hopping backwards again she lined up the edge of the book in her sights and shot her tongue forward, eyes closed, in hopes that it connected with the page. Thankfully it did, and as it came shooting back into her mouth the page turned.

“This is going to take forever.” She sighed, as footsteps approached. She looked up to see a tall, well everything was tall now, blonde man with a sword looking at her. He asked her some questions, and she tried communicating with him that she was human – really, truly, definitely – but he didn’t seem to understand. He was looking for his friend, whom Gen had seen earlier, so she tried communicating that she would lead him there if he would find some way to fix this situation. Eventually he picked her up and carried her through the library in search of his friend. Would this work out for the best? How would this work out. If only she wasn’t so damn thirsty!

Ah, poor Gen!
I like the transformation process you described, especially the fly part :)
