More Than a Silver Lining

You’ve been a rock, a star, a gem,
A precious and dear friend.
But once again my words have hurt –
I automatically hit ‘send’

Without filtering through emotions,
Filtering thoughts or deeds.
I let my situation blind me,
And became oblivious to your needs.

Truth be told, I’m nervous,
Scared I’ll say something that’s wrong.
So instead I keep my mouth shut,
And time ticks slowly on.

So let me take this moment,
To lay things on the line.
Without you I’d be nothing,
Nowhere, and running out of time.

You tried your bloody hardest,
To raise funds towards my cause –
Halted only by poor people
Who brought the need to pause.

You sit there and you listen
As I cry and howl over the phone…
And because you’re on the other end,
I know I’m not alone.

You’re brave, you’re smart, you’re funny,
You’re kindness to the core.’
Because of you, I am alive,
There is not much more

For which I can directly thank you,
Because I have said it all.
You catch me when I’m breaking
And when I begin to fall.

You’re there with sword or sling or bow,
To slay my enemies.
Your kindness and compassion, well,
It brings me to my knees.

You’re not a silver lining…
You’re a freaking golden cloud.
And the fact that I can call you friend?
That’s something of which I’m very proud.

I love you beyond what I think is possible,
For this tiny, broken heart.
And each moment we’re not talking
Is one we’re too far apart.

So forgive me for my blunder,
For making you feel sad.
When my head space is not of the best,
I can do things that are bad

And that affect my friendships,
Effect those whom I hold dear –
Those I try to push away
Even as I try to draw them near.

You are my heart, my first port of call
When I am in a bind.
I’m proud as hell of all you do,
Proud to have you as a friend and call you mine.
